OHAKUNE

FARMERS’ UNION The annual meeting of. the Ohakuue branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ L'nion wag presided over by Air. G. D. Blacklock, who extended a hearty welcome to Messrs. Hammond and K. Little, president and secretary uf the Wellington provincial executive from Feilding. The ninth annual report showed that there were now 71 members. Reference was made to the great loss the branch had sustained by the death of Mr. G. J. Goldfinch, who had been chairman of the branch since its formation in .1925. Another member, m the person of Mr. F. Mowatt, had also passed away. 'The work of the past year was reviewed. The policy of the union was mentioned and attention drawn to the work of the League of Nations, price of butter, high ex'hangc and other subjects. The. report and balance-sheet were duly adopted. Mr. Prentice advocated the reduc tion of the annual subscription of £l. Air. Fetzer considered £1 a very reasonable yearly subscription, considering the work that, was done for the farmer. Mr. Hammond said the question had been thoroughly considered by the Dominion officers and it was thought unwise to attempt to carry on with a smaller subscription. Mr. Blacklock spoke on rating, rate of interest, mortgages, ntc. Mr. Hammond spoke of the work of rhe Dominion executive. He claimed that the Farmers’ l’nion had done much good. r i he uni?n could take the responsibilitv of raising the rate of exchange, The union was behind the demand for a monetary commission and was |®sponsi‘b]e for the dairy commission. Afr, Little spoke on the subject of tariffs and quota.--. The W.D.F.U. provided a dainty supper, which was much appreciated. Mrs. Read, president of the W.D.F.I .. thanked the branch for thv opport u mtv of meeting the provincial officer!? PRESENTATION Prior to their departure from Ohakune Messrs. N. D. Cronin ami K. Roberts were entertained by the members of the Bowling Club at a farewell social. Air. R. Hanger presided. He referred to the work of Mr, Cronin as a member of the Bowling Club for the last eleven years ami to the five years that Mr. Robert•> had been a bowler, Mr. Cronin was one of the. oldest members of the club and was a hardworking, popular official. .As an engineer he had made many friends and the whole district was sorry at the departure of Mr. Cronin and hi-' wife and family. Mr. Roberts started bowling five years ago, but he was runnerup for the championship and this year was chaiiqiiun. He was also a painstaking and conscientious worker. Ou behalf of the members oi the Bcxliug Club he wished th e two every success and he hoped they would be advertising bureau for the district. He handed a case of pipes to Afr.
