STORMY WEATHER

SNOW AT BRUNSWICK GALE SWEEPS WANGANUI A bitterly cold gale swept Wanganui and the surrounding districts last night, bringing with it squalls of icy rain. The snow reported to have fallen in the higher altitudes of the back-country worked its way down towards the coast to Brunswick on Alonday night, with the result that the district in that neighbourhood was covered with a white mantle yesterday morning. During the day the snow disappeared, but another fall occurred at about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Wanganui experienced a cold weekend, but Sunday was bright and sunny. Rain fell on Alonday in showers, and the sun shone fitfully yesterday morning. Between 3.30 o’clock and 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon a southerly wind began to blow, increasing to gale force as the darkness fell, bringing with it cold, stinging rain. Country districts report that the weather has been bad since last Friday, and that a cold wind has been blowing continuously. It is reported that country roads are showing signs of the weather. Notification has been received by the Automobile Association from the Chateau, National Park, and Turangi that roads in those vicinities arc open, but that chains are still required to get to both places on account of roads being wet and slushy as a result of the melted snow. The meteorological records taken at the Friends’ School on St. John’s Hill yesterday show that it was equal to the coldest day of the year, the maximum temperature having risen no higher than 41 degrees Fahrenheit, while the minimum temperature was .33 degrees.
