FASHIONABLE WEDDING
NEW YORK SOCIETY AGOG SON OF LATE J. J. ASTOR Received July 1, 6.5 p.m. NEW YORK, June 30. At Newport. Rhode Island, Mr. John Jacob Astor, aged 21, third son of the late Mr. J. J. Astor, who died in the Titanic disaster in 1912, John being born posthumously, was married to-day to Miss Ellen Tuck French, aged 18. also scion of an American colonial family. The ceremony attracted one of the greatest gatherings of society people for many years. The groom's mother. Mrs. Madeline Astor, and Mr. Dick Fiermonte, attended, but not his stepfather Enzo Fiermonte, the Italian light heavyweight pugilist, who was re ported to have been detained in New York negotiating a championship bout with Maxie Rosenbloom. Wedding gifts, numbering several hundred, and said to be worth millions of dollars, including Mr. Astor's gifts to his bride, were heavily guarded. Measuring only two inches in height, the smallest radio valve in the world is now being turned out by Britisn manufacturers: it has a range of 100 miles, and amplifies speech 15 times. The Citv Hall, Westminster, is London’s foggiest spot. Between October, 1932, and March, 1933, it had 104 days of smoke-haze. Victoria recorded S 3 days and Westminster Bridge only 39.
