COTTON CHAMPION
BRITISH OPEN GOLF AGGREGATE RECORD SARAZEN EQUALLED (By Ttlcgrajh—Pre l * Association —Copyright) LONDON, June 20. Cotton won the British open golf championship with a total of 283, equalling Sarazen’s record. Cotton’s third and fourth rounds were 72 and 79. Brews (South Africa) was second., with 71, 288. and Padgham (Britain) third, with 74, 290. Further remarkable goff was witnessed at Sandwich, where Henry Cotton won the open golf championship by a substantia! margin. During the course of five days’ play he first lowered the course record during the qualifying round with 66, and after returning a card of 67 in the first round, reduced his own record in the second round with 65, the aggregate for 36 holes having never been equalled on a championship course. A strong wind was blowing to-day, but in the third round Cotton was 72 and in the fourth 79.
Cotton, who is at present engaged as professional at Waterloo Club (Belgium), is the first Englishman to win the championship since 1923. A high wind made conditions much more difficult at Sandwich. Cotton had not the same luck in the draw as in the earlier rounds, when he was one of ihe earliest players. Enormous wellbehaved crowds followed his play. Cotton began after half an hour’s steady practice with every club. He showed no sign of worrying about the harder conditions. It soon became apparent that Kirkwood, who was playing ahead of Cotton, was going to be a strong challenger, as he holed the first six in 3 under 4’s, and finished the first nine in 34 to Cotton’s 35. Shute, the holder, made a poor show, and put himself out of the running with an %■'. Third Round Scoring Low. Third round scores in the British open championship were:—Nolan 75.
