MATCH AT CARTERTON WAIRARAPA DEFEATED ( Per Press Association ). CARTERTON, June 30. Wairarapa and Hajykc’s Bay met at Carterton to-day in fine weather under good ground conditions, ’Bay winning by 15 to 13. Play opened evenly, the forwards working well, while there were occasional glimpses of back play. Fine kicking gave ’Bay the advantage and a back passing rush saw Evans score a flukey try. Bradley failed with an easy kick. Desultory play followed. Then ’Bay staged an attractive back movement which left Browne flying in the corner. Hemi brought him down but Evans, coming up on the outside, dived across. Bradley failed to convert. — Bay 6. A Wairarapa forward rush saw Wairarapa over the line but the ball went into in-goal. Still attacking, Nunn sent out to Fitzgerald, to Devine, to Stringfellow, the last-named scoring. Fitzgerald failed to convert. The Wairarapa forwards brilliantly dribbled the ball close to the goal. Smith relieved. Stringfellow penetrated and passed back, with the forward Trass grounding. Hemi converted.—Wairarapa 8, ’Bay 6. At the opening of the second spell the Wairarapa backs got going and the forwards carried on, Reid going to the line and passing to Trass, to Sievers, to Mackay, to Henderson, who scored under the posts. Hemi converted.— Wairarapa 13, ’Bay 6, Wairarapa pressed play but could not advance from the half-way line. Evans set off down the line and passed infield to Mataira, who scored handily. Bradley converted. ’Bay came back with a rush and Le Qucsne potted a goal.— ’Bay 15, Wairarapa 13. There was no further score. Mr. F. Dean was referee. NEW ZEALAXD AFFAIRS FINANCING of toubs. [ P«r Press - Association. 1 WELLINGTON, June 29. A large number of applications for grants to enable tours to be made was discussed by the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union. The chairman, Mr. 8. 8 Dean, said the committee’s original idea of granting £4O to subsidise touring teams was tc enable the larger unions to pay visits to the smaller and not only build up the finances of the smaller unions but assist to improve the standard of play. It was now found, however, that these visits from the city teams did not swell the coffers of the smaller unions which are now asking the New Zea land Union to subsidise return matches. These unions, he said, should be able to finance their tour or should nol travel. Air. A. C. Kitto said that football was not improved by« sending B tcami into the country districts. It was agreed to grant £75 to Tara naki to assist in the cost of sending a B team to the King Country, South Auckland, Thames Valley and Bay ul Plenty. North Auckland were votec £4O to send a team to Auckland anc Waikato. Bush were granted £4O t< send a team to the Seddon Shield dis tricts.
