REGENT THEATRE

‘ MYSTERY OF MR X’ The name of Robert Montgomery in the cast of any Him is a guarantee of polished acting and good entertainment, and when he is supported by such players as Elizabeth Allan, Lewis Stone and Ralph Forbes, the success of that picture is assured. “The Mystery of Mr. X,’’ which is proving deservedly popular at the Regent is a return to the old fashioned thriller, but the picture is so well made that the return is welcome. Mr. Montgomery is cast as a debonair jewel thief who happens to be operating in London at the same time as a homicidal maniac who is perpetrating a series of murders of policemen. Suspicion falls on Montgomery, and the film is largely concerned with a battle of wits between him and a clever detective, convincingly played by Stone. Featured players also include Henry Stephenson, Forrester Harvey, Ivan Simpson. Leonard Mudic, Alec B. Francis, and Charles Irwin. Numerous scenes are laid inside Scotland Yard. Settings ha\e been duplicated exactly from photographs and specifications furnished. The ranking commissioner’s oflico *s identical with the original, even to a bronze bust of Caesar standing like a sentinel in the corner. So also is the roof, wireless room, finger print department, bureau of records, and the exteriors of the structure. A thoroughly delightful programme is rounded off with a group of supports, which include a Hearst Metrotone News, ay Australian Cinesound Review, ir which; are shown some views of a blind Sydney man giving a remarkable demonstration of his ability at golf. Also ott the programme are an entertaining Rathe Pictorial, a most original techiiicolour comedy entitled “Roast Beef and Movies,” containing clever skits on Mao West, Jack Oakic. Laurel and Hardy and other Hollywood stars.
