APPLICATION FOR £l000

TECHNICAL COLLEGE NEEDS RESTORING TENNIS COURTS. PRAISE FOR RELIEF WORKERS. Application is to be made to the Department of Education by the Board of Governors of the Wanganui Technical College for a grant of £lOOO. The money will be used, if granted, for improvements to the hostel grunds (£250), restoring the tennis courts (£250), and moving two class-rooms from the tennis courts, and drainage (£200). A sum of £3OO is to be asked for in order that the incidental expenditure may be raised in accordance with the estimates. “We realise the difficult economic position at the present time, but it is imperative that something be done,” said Air. A. T. Cavell, the chairman, who presided over the following members: Airs. Boyd, Alessrs. F. Symes, L. W. Hogben, IV. T. Benefield, F. H. Allen, W. Bruce, W. Palmer and W. R. AlcElwain. It was recalled by Air. Cavell that, after the Hawke’s Bay earthquake, certain of the school buildings had been decapitated and extra class-rooms had been provided on grounds that happened to be the tennis courts. While the class-rooms were very good temporary buildings, and the board was satisfied with them, they wished to have the rooms moved in order that the tennis courts might be put into use again. Air. Cavell also pointed out that, some time ago, the board’s incidental expenses had been cut by 46 per cent., or nearly half, which either meant that the board had been very extravagant in the past or that it would be unable to continue as at present. The board had the support of practically every other Technical College Board in the Dominion for its request that the grant for incidental expenditure be increased. The of Education, the Hon. R. Alasters, had been written to previously and asked to visit Wanganui so that the board might interview hum Air. Alasters had stated he would do so, but so far the board had had no opportunity of seeing him. Air. Cavell proposed that another letter be sent to the Alinistcr acquainting him of the board’s desires and asking that the application be granted. The proposal was agreed to, and it was agreed that a copy of the board’s request be forwarded to Air. AV. A. Veitch, ALP. It was reported that, the levelling work carried out at the school grounds by the unemployed had been most satisfactory. The board expressed its appreciation of the work done, and decided that a letter should be sent to Air. J. Lili commending him for the interest and enterprise he had shown in connection with the work. The board agreed that a sum up to £lOO should bo spent on top-dressing the hostel grounds. The matter was left to the grounds committee with power to act. ,
