R.S.A. CONFERENCE

OPENED BY THE MAYOR ACTIVITIES COMMENDED WELLINGTON, June 27. Every branch of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association was represented at the eighteenth annual general meeting of the Dominion council of the association which commenced | yesterday in the council chamber of the I Town Hall. Major-General Sir A. H. I Bussell, K.C.8., K.C.M.G., the Dornin- i ion president, was in the chair. In formally declaring the conference opened the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. His-| lop), expressed his pleasure at being given the opportunity to do so for the third year in succession, and at meet-1 ing so many old friends. During the 1 past two or three years the organise-. lion generally had had to contend with great difficulties, and he wa» glad to ’see from the annual report that in the I past year efficiency had been uiain--1 tained as well as in previous years. 1 The outstanding problem, had been, and I still was, unemployment, but he could say from his personal knowledge of the activities of the local branch—and he was conldcnt that other branches were equally efficient —that the task of dealing with the problem had been immeasurably helped by the efforts of the R.S.A. There were still many difficulties to face, said Mr. Hislop, but so far as Wellington was concerned, and he thought it was reflected elsewhere, there were definite signs of improvement, in the unemployment figures at any rate, and it was hoped ultimately to'overcome the existing problems. He wished the delegates a successful conference and the strengthening and renewal of many old friendships. Committees were set up to consolidate the remits under various heading s and repo it. _ ~ __
