MAJESTIC THEATRE
tfHE TOM KATZ BAND. .Saxophones, high and low-pitched, some as big as the players themselves, others ridiculously small in comparison, made the Majestic Theatre vibrant with music when th e Toni Katz Band “Mirth-making masters of melodics” they style themselves—made .its debut on Saturday. Many exponents of the saxophone have been heard before, but it is said that Toni Katz’s Band eclipses them all, and demonstrates as it has never previously been shown, that the instrument is capable of producing other than blatancy—mellow notes that fall soothingly on the ear. The clever and original artists play and dance a little, but even in their less serious momeuts they sacrifice nothing to th 0 perfect rhythm and effect of the pieces they play. One minute the audience will be shuffling its feet to the swing of jazz strains, ami the next it. will be enjoying melodies that revive memories of musical comedy of yesterday. There are half a dozen performers in the band, and they are all artists at their work. The instrument:; are all saxophones of every key and size, but in the hands of the little negro boys they excite the emotion of the audience to a pitch of enthusiasm. The old popular tunes < cine forth with new and amazing i .tality. .Sometimes they arc low and sweet, sometimes sad and sombre, sometimes bright and hapjYy, and at all times pleasurably welcome. 'They stir the emotions according to the nature ol their moods and fancies. These master, musicians syncopate their way through a programme surprising in its novelty and originality. There have been tnusicales and there have been comedies, but this is a pictur c that combines both with a •tasty, tangy flavour that guarantees to I Keep one 's spirits up.
