FATALITY AT BROOKLANDS
EMPIRE TROPHY HANDICAP. MOTOR-RACING ACE KILLED. Received Juno 24. 7.5 p.m. LONDON, June 23. John Houldsworth, motor-racing ace, driving a Bugatti in the 300-milc Empire Trophy Handicap at Brooklands, violently skidded at the snake bend. The car somersaulted twice and Houldsworth died in hospital from a fractured skull. Earl Howe also crashed at the bend. His car turned round twice and ran backwards towards the fence, which was smashed. Howe was uninjured. Eyston, driving an M.G. Magnette, and averaging 80.01 miles an hour, won the race, while Whitney Straight, the American millionaire, driving a Mastrat at 82.45 m.p.h. was second, Eccles, driving a Bugatti at 81.70 m.p.h. was third, and Cobb, Alfa Romeo, 81.36 m.p.h., fourtli.
