LATEST ARRIVALS

THE FINAL GALLOPS YESTERDAY’S OPERATIONS LITTLE WORK OF INTEREST Again yesterday morning a boisterous wind with occasional showers made track-watchers uncomfortable when they gathered to see the final training operations for the Wauganui winter meeting. Though the conditions were wintry they were not really so bad as have been experienced on some occasions, but they were rather unpleasant. ►Still, there was a large crowd of spectators, who were provided with little more than useful gallops on the part of some of the visitors, though one or two good gallops were done. Number one track was very fast, surprisingly so for some of the visitors, who did not expect to find the going in such excellent order after the i ain. Practically all the visitors from a distance have arrived, while those within “float” range may be expected to-day. Among yesterday’s arrivals i were View Halloo, Boon, Porotiti, Waipiro, Taitoru, Kaola, Moatoa, Guy Court, Argument. Gay Seton, Princess Doreen, Kalphyllis, Pladie, Colenso, Ruri, Gibraltar, Staftichion, Headmistress, Merry Way, Count ’ Lendroff, Prince Colossus, ueo Colossus, Matorni, Gold Mission and Playground, while Makeup. Speed. Stitch, Werohia, Souchong and Kaihoro have also arrived. One of the best gallops, under the conditions yesterday morning, was that in which Werohia and Stitch were associated, the pair being together all the way to register Imin. 16 4-5 for six furlongs after doing the half-mile in 50 2-5. Werohia was doing it nicely. Kaihoro slipped over five furlongs, being clocked over the last four in 51 secs. Arauline pleased a little more than De Trop at the end of five furlongs, which they covered in 64secs., the first quarter taking them 25. High. Grader had no companion with whom to school over hurdles, so he was sent over six furlongs and did it comfortably in Imin. 19secs. A large number of other horses did useful work, but none was sent against the watch, their preparation having been completed earlier.

AWAPUNI TRIALS

CANDIDATES FOR, WANGANUI PALMERSTON N., May 8. The weather was fine for to-day's track work at Awapuni, but the tracks were heavy. The course proper v\as available for the gallops, and the flags were about 20 feet out from the rails. The first horses to be speeded up were Currajong, Hduwai, and Callamart, and they were sent along over seven furlongs. Beginning smartly, Currajong took up the role of pacemaker. Hauwai and Callamart were never far away and they were on

terms with, the leader at the home turn. In a good finish Hauwai did best to lead from Callamart at the post, though there was little in it. The time was Imin. 39secs., the live taking Imin. lUsecs. Callamart is engaged in the Century Hurdles and he should be in good fettle on Thursday. Senegal (W. J. Broughton) had Tudar (R. Reed), as a companion over seven furlongs. Senegal hopped away at tho seven-furlong peg and was picked up by Tudor short of the six. They were together for the rest of the way, Senegal, who finished easily, cutting the distance out in Imin. JGsocs. Round Score (S. Anderson), and the. Acre —Moutoa Ivanova gelding in Luke Wilson’s stable, w r ho*was ridden by Scobie. were galloped six furlongs, and there was little in it at the post after Imin. 24secs. spent on the journey. C. Thomson rode Riotous, tho Steeplechase topweight, over a couple oi bru/di fences and then sprinted him six furlongs. Riotous did his work well. He has plenty of weight on Thun.day, but he should gt.c a good account of himself. fhrasjier (K. Vuitre), and Te Raa gitamen (G. Wynd), were eempauioas over a mile. They began slowly but were going along well over the last part of the journey, not being troubled to complete the distance in Imin. 56 secs. They were on terms all the way. Good Hunting (R. Reed) and Chief Marionette (W. J. Broughton), weie sprinted five furlongs and they were doing it nicely at the finish after taking 52 2-ssecs. for the last half-mule. Good Hunting is in splendid form. Easterly (K. Chisholm), Ythan (P. Rc.e), and Boudoir (L. H. Jones), galloped a mile. Boudoir was the pace;maker for the first five furlongs, but the three were in line crossing the top and for the run down the h line stretch.
