TOWN BOARD The ordinary monthly meeting of the Uuuterville i own Board was held on Monday mgui. Present: Cr.i. K. A. Gordon, (chairman), K, K. Simpson, J. \V. Clarke, H. Dillon. A letter from the Mayor of Palmerston North objecting to the system of payment uf unemployed was endorsed. Crs. Simpson and Clarke did not vote. The secretary, Chamber of Commerce, wrote asking what charge would be made for use of the hall lor community singing once a month during the winter. After some discussion it was decided that providing the total proceeds went towards providing funds for the Christmas Carnival the hall be let for the cost of the lighting. National Estates, Ltd., wrote forwarding cheque for penalty on rates for 1931-32. Mr. N. Hyde wrote paying the whole of the rates overdue on the children ’s home and asking the board to forego the 10 per cent, penalty imposed. Heid over till next meeting. The health officer s annual report was read. Everything was reported as satisfactory. Mr. J. Bull wrote thanking the board for the use of the Town Hall on Anzac Day. The Pictures Mr. J. B. McKnight wrote stating that he had no objection to the B.iS.A. booking the hall lor Friday, July 20, providing he had the right to cancel his picture screening on Saturday 21, as from past experience he found a dance on Friday was detrimental to picture business on the following Saturday. It was decided that the board, could uot agree to the cancellation of the picture showing on Saturday, July 21. Mr. McKnight also wrote, stating that it was proposed to celebrate the second anniversary similar to last year, and asking the board to allow the use of the hall on the same conditions. The terms last year were cost of electricity only, and it was decided to grant the use of the hall on the same terms this year. The statement of accounts showed a debit balance after last meeting of £271 Is 3d; receipts during month £153 7s 4d; payments during month, £5l 14s lid; to-night’s payments, £ll 4s 9d; leaving a debit balance of £127 13s 7d Foreman’s Report The foreman (Mr. E. J. Hurley), reported as follows: The maintenance of Ongo, Marshall, Kotukutuku and Rangatira roads has been attended to. Metal from Ross’ pit has been spread on corner of Pourewa roads and at approaches to bridges on Kotukutuku Road and Main {Street. Drains have been cleaned out on Rangatira, Marshall and Murimutu Roads, and Main Street. Water in reservoir 26 feet. A broken pipe in the main, Paraekaretu Street, has been repaired. One blockage in the sewer was located and re--1 moved. The decking of bridge in lloponui Street has been repaired. Plane trees have been pruned. Grass cutting on Beautifying Society ’s plots has been attended to. General The estimates for highways maintenance were approved. The chairman said he had been asked to suggest to the Chamber of Commerce that that body urge stock firms not to hold sales on bank holidays. A motion to that effect was carried. Some correspondence on loan considation and conversion, advantageous to the board, was read and will be discussed at next meeting. The balance-sheet for the year ended March 31 last was adopted to be settled after it is audited. Heating the Hall Correspondence was read in reference to quotations for heating the hall, the plant mentioned at last meeting being too small. After discussion, the question x\as held over until further information was to hand. Crockery for Hall The chairman said it had been mentioned that the letting of hall was handicapped by lack of crockery. He had obtained quotations for indent orders and he thought this matter could be discussed when the question of heating the hall was before the board. This was agreed to. DOMAIN BOARD At- the conclusion of the Town Board ■ neeting on Monday night a meeting of HunterviUe Domain Board was held. I The Rugby Union applied for use of i iho Domain. —Granted. I The lessee of Queen’s Park wrote asking for a reduction of rent. In reply to the chairman, the secretary said the rent was £25 per annum. After discussion, it was decided on the motion of Messrs. Simpson and Dillon that the rent be reduced to £lB per annum for one year as from April 1 last. The question of arrears was left in the hands of the clerk.
