OPERA ON THE FILM

’JHE decision of Mr. De Mille, the film director, to put Opera on the cinema, may indicate that another revolution is coming in cinema technique. It is now possible to produce on a screen as wide as the stage of a theatre, and this permits of a larger number of people being presented at one time, which would assist the presentation of operas very considerably. The larger screening has, however, been resisted by the exhibitors because of the high cost of the installation. The coming of the “talkies” saddled the industry with a capital debt from which it is only now really emerging.
