DRINKING HOURS
EXTENSION IN ENGLAND * COURT DENIES IT. LONDON, April 26. “1 regret the decision, because the magistrates who made the order know the district and what its residents and visitors want/’ said Air Justice Humphreys, in concurring with the Chief Justice, Lord Hewat, and Air Justice Avory in the opinion that the Steyning (Sussex) Alagistrates’ order, extending the opening of hotels half an hour in summer time was illegal. The decision affects 120 holiday resorts in the South of England, where the licensing justices have extended hotel hours since 1921. The Daily Mail says it regards the prohibition of summer-time extension of drinking hours as unfortunate, “as it W’ill deter the visits of foreigners and send Britons abroad, as people hate being treated like silly children and deprived of the right of judgment. It is due to Dismal Dora, an imbecile, mischievous law, the reform of which a handful of faddists has repeatedly prevented."
