SHIPPING SERVICE

MELBOURNE TO BLUFF, EARLIER REINSTATEMENTf ( Per Press Association. 1 INVERCARGILL, May 7. The shipping service between Meh bourne anil Bluff, and its reinstatement in November, were considered at a meeting to-day of representatives oi the Southland League, Invercargill Chamber of Commerce, and Bluff Harbour Board. It was decided by the meeting Ki send the following telegram to the Union Steam Ship Company, and to despatch copies to the Prime Ministei and Postmaster-General, asking foi their support: —“A meeting of repre sentatives of local authorities in terested in the South Island .Melbourne passenger service was held to-day, and while appreciating your announcement that the Maheno will be operating in the service, unanimous disappointment was expressed that arrangements were not being made for the reinstatement of the service at an earlier date, in view of the many important events taking place, including the opening of the- centenary celebrations, Melbourne Cup, etc. The interested local authorities of Southland strongly urge the commencement of the service in September. They would also urge your favourable consideration of including Hobart as a port of call in the service, as apparently it is only a matter of applying to the Commonwealth Government for the service to operate for passenger traffics on this section of the run.’ ’
