HIGH COST IN AUSTRALIA OVER THIRTY MILLIONS (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received May 7, 9.30 p.m. CANBERRA, May 7. The Commonwealth Statistician, Mr. McPhee, giving evidence before the commission inquiring into the question of increasing the Commonwealth gratis to Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania, said the cost of social services in Australia was over £30,000,000, of which £11,000,000 was represented by old age and invalid pensions.
