TRAVELLING BY AIR

NEW PLYMOUTH JOCKEY. FAST TRIP TO AUCKLAND. At 8.15 on Saturday morning aeroplane ZK-ABP, piloted by Mr. H. W. Lightband, left the New Plymouth aerodrome at Bell Block for Auckland. The ’plane had one passenger, the New Plymouth trainer and jockey Horace Dulieu, who was going to Auckland to fulfil a riding engagement at the Avondale Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. Until August last Dulieu was a jockey only, but this season he has commenced to train as well as ride. As

a jockey ihe did considerable riding for the Ellerslie trainer F. Gilchrist, and this mentor, states the Taranaki Daily News, was particularly anxious to secure his services for his horse Courthaven in the Highweight Handicap. Gilchrist communicated by telephone with Dulieu, who informed him that he would accept the ride provided he could make suitable transport arrangements. He saw Mr. Lightband, who agreed to take him and bring him back in ihe one day. He then informed Gilchrist that he would accept the mount. On Saturday morning Dulieu worked on his big team on the New Plymouth racecourse and then after breakfast motored to the aerodrome at Bell Block. At 8.15 a.in. the, 'plane took off and shortly after 10 o’clock arrived at Mangere. An hour later Dulieu was on the course at Avondale. Just over an hour later he was on Courthaven in the Highweight and riding with his usual skill he brought Gilchrist’s charge home a comfortable winner, paying a good dividend on the win machine. At 4 p.m. he was on his way back and was home for tea. The next morning he was again supervising the work of his team on the track. There is every possibility of Dulieu making the trip again on Wednesday for the second day of the Avondale meeting.
