ACCESS TO BOWSER

SEALING OF ROAD SURFACE SHOULD HIGHWAY’S BOARD CONTRIBUTE! In view of the fact that the revenue tor main highways is derived largely from petrol tax, should the Highways Board expend money in making the road access to bowsers ii. keeping with he standard of the bitumen surface of i main highway? This was a question A’lnch gave rise to debate at the Waitotara County Council meeting yesterul,V * A Proprietor made application for ho area in front of a bowser, at the ride of a main road to bo sealed. The bowser is just off the bitumen surface and car traffic causes a mud iole to develop i n the winter time. The -Ounty chairman (Air. W. Morrison) retried that he had raised the matter it a meeting of the Highways Board ind the request had been refused. “I lid not Think the board would grant, t,” he said, “because there would be hundreds of applications of a similar <ind from all over the Dominion. Cr. T. Alexander: It is within the province of the board to do this. Who contributes to the fund, but the motorists? I think the board is very shortsighted. Cr. R. Laird: T quite agree. Cr. Morrison: What about sealing the Irit of road in front of a factory, for instance, or in front of a store, or a hotel? Hundreds of propertv owners might want their gateways sealed. If the board consented to this there would be hundreds of applications from all wer New Zealand. Cr. Alexander: Hotels supply beer ind whisky and Highways Board gets nothing. This is a bowser station! The county engineer, Mr. T. Dix. reported that the cost of doing the work immediately in front of the bowser would be £l6 and to do a length on each side as well, to obviate the mud. would run into £46. Crs. Laird and R. Farley considered that out of the question so far as the owner of the bowser was concerned. It was decided to advise the bowser proprietor of the position and it could be raised again if the council was doing any sealing work in the vicinity.
