SHEEPSKIN DEMAND
STATE OF THE HIDE MARKET. WELLINGTON, April 7. Bidding was spirited at the fortnightly sales of hides and skins held by Wellington woolbrokers yesterday, at which average catalogues were submitted to a good attendance of buyers. There was an excellent demand for all grades and descriptions of sheepskins, prices generally being on a par with late rates, except for sound skins for which they were in the sellers' favour. Salted skins showed little change. In the hide market inquiry for all grades was keen, but values for cows were inclined to weaken somewhat in view of the lower tendency in overseas markets. Ox hides maintained the level of the last sale in all the heavier weights, with keen competition from the tanning interests. Kip t yearling, and calf were fully firm on late values. There was a fair demand for tallow at lata rates. The range of prices was as follows: —Dry sheepskins: Halfbred, 8d to lid per lb; fine crossbred, 9Jd to lid; medium, 6<d to BJd; coarse, 6d to 7id; half wools, 3ild to 8U1; quarter wools, s£d to 6Jd; pelts, 4d to 5Jd.
