A CHAMPION BAND

VISIT TO WANGANUI. DELIGHTFUL concert at REGENT. Under the baton of Lieutenat <?. Pike, the Palmer* ton North Garrison Band, champion of New Zealand, gave a most delightful concert in the Regent Theatre, the programme having been arranged in co-operation with thj Queen Alexandra Baud, of Wanganui. The Palmerston combination was in very fine form, particularly in the selection “Nabucca,” by Verdi. The tone was quiet and very sweet and was heard to pleasing effect in the hymn, “Pax Dei.” Several Palmerston North a.lists accompanied the band and contributed to the programme. Miss Thomson (Palmerston North), soprano. sang two beautiful numbers, “Springtime Reminds Me of You,” and “Goodbye.’* and, with her brother, sang two duets, “Home to Our Mountain” and “Little Green Valley.” The audience was greatly delighted with tnese two numbers and insisted on hearing more, request# that were gladly acceded to, Messrs. F. Gedson (xylophone) and I Ivan Speight (piano) played several ! sprightly number? that so appealed to { the audience, that the players could I hardly leave the stage. They intend to visit Wanganui in a fortnight’# ; time. Lieutenant Webb and Mr. Gor- ! don Bcrgersen were heard in a very , pleasing cornet duct, which was one of the best items of the evening. Mr. Toon, of Palmerston North (baritone), sang a number of sentimental ballads, which gave his fine voice the scope it needed to bo hoard to full etfect. In every way the concert was a success and the very large audience enjoyed every item. It is the intention of the Queen’s Own Band return the compliment by visiting Palmerston next Sunday. .Last night the Palmerston band and visiting artists were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson at Alba House.
