; SUBJECT OF CONTROVERSY i INFALLIBILITY QUESTIONED 1 ■ LONDON, March 22. t Some doubt has been thrown on the 3 fingerprint system as providing an in- . fallible clue to identity, says the Daily . Mail. It follows the conviction with i a sentence of two months’ imprison- , ment of George Groves for theft at i Bristol, though his fingerprints were the ; prosecution’s only evidence. Police experts say the system is 100 - per cent reliable, though Dr. Galt, the 1 eminent pathologist, admits the possii bility that there may be two persons - in the world with identical fingerprints. 3 British scientists do not credit the - American claim that fingerprints can " bo altered surgically, and doctors say tho operation would bo most painful, and would leave a permanent scar. 3 A Scotland Yard Commissioner, Sir f Trevor Bigham, says the classification ’ of fingerprints is the most valuable contribution yet made to police work. ’ European experts are similarly con--3 vinced of its reliability. Fingerprint ‘ identification suffices for a conviction 1 • r. . m Germany. Dr. Locard, famous French crimin- ’ ologist, says no case of error has ever been discovered or ever will be.
