MASTER BRIERLY

BEST STAYER IN LAND? TRIUMPHS AT ELLERSLIE. With his successes In the President’s Handicap and Nolan Handicap at the Ellerslie Easter meeting following closely on his Te Aroha victory iu the Herries Memorial Cup, Master Brierly may be said to have proved himself one of the leading performers over distances in commission. Master Brierly may be the best present stayer in the land, though he has yet to succeed above miles. He is proving himself a wonderful weightcarrier, and if the rich Melbourne Cup prize does not tempt his connections across the Tasman agan next spring hl looks to have an outstanding chance of adding the Now Zealand Cup in November to his already most impressive record. His racing career began when he was a two-year-old, and during that term he won two races. Last season he quickly climbed towards the top flight, his successes including the A.R.C. Grey Handicap (1 mile) and the A.R.C. Autumn Handicap (1J miles), and the Avondale Autumn Handicap (1$ miles). Taken to Australia during the spring he failed to reproduce his form and a third in six starts was his disappointing record. On his return to the Dominion he was allowed some time in which to recover from an injury, and his first appearance here this season was in the Auckland Cup. in which he performed creditably to finish sixth. In his next races the was fourth in the A.R.C. Handicap, second beaten a head by Kiltowyu in tho Grandstand Handicap, third beaten a head and a neck in the Takapuna Cup, and then a winner in the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap (9 furlongs). He follow'ed up this success immediately by winning the Herries Memorial Cup (11 furlongs) at To Aroha, a»u under big weights he was third on the second day at Te Aroha, unplaced in the Storey Memorial at Te Rapa, and third in the Ohinemuri Cup. This was the attractive race record loading up to his Ellerslie double triumph. He was responsible for a sterling performance on the first day at Auckland in winning the President’s Handicap (1J miles) with 9.7 in 2min. ssec., whch equalled Nightly’s course record; and on the second day he rose to even greater heights by carrying 10.0 to victory in the H. O. Nolan Handicap, i (he new title of the Autumn Handicap. Twelve months earlier he achieved his first open company success in this race His record to date is:—

Master Brierly is one of the first of the progeny of the Stedfast horse Musketoon who won races up to 1$ miles, and he, descends from the famous Mermaid taproot, through a branch I (Cascade) that has not had particular | success in recent years. His dam Lady Brierly was by Archiestown from Ko Iwi (dam also of the jumper Pouri), by Demosthenes from the The Boyne (dam of the Wellington Cup winner Rewi Poto), by Merriwee. Jt looks quite a . fair staying pedigree and so it is proving itself. Master Brierly was bred by Mr. R. B. Hines, of Te Aroha, who had Musketoon at his stud, and he is held on lease by Mr. M. J. Moodabe, for whom be, is trained at Ellerslie by R. 8. Bagby, who does only a little riding nowadays owing to increasing weight but who was on him and handled bim ’ splendidly iu his two engagements last week-end. Bing Brierly, a two-year-old winner this season, is a half-brother to him by King Lu.
