BOOKMAKER IN COURT

SUBSTANTIAL FINE. [ Per Press Association. ] DUNEDIN, April 5. I Lewies Nathaniel Curtis was fined £lOO by the magistrate (Mr. Bartholomew) this morning on a charge of using premises in Albert Street, St. Clair, as a common gaming house. When a detective made the raid Curtis admitted that he was bookmaking. Counsel suggested that defendant was in a small way of business, but the magistrate said that Curtis could not expect to ask for a moderate penalty as when he was last before the Court in 1923 he was fined £4OO.
