WANGANUI CENTRE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS BIG SINGLES TOURNAMENT GLOVER WINS THE TITLE Glover, of St. John’s Bowling yesterday won the ehampion of champion singles title in the tournament conducted by the Wanganui Bowling Centre. Play took pla*eo on tho St. John’s green, which was in splendid order. The weather was fine, with an entire absence of wind. Eight contestants took part in the tourney. Details of scores arc:— First Round Easton (Taihape) 22, v. G. Handley (Rapanui) 7. Glover (St. John’s) 18, v. London (Wanganui) 16. 11, Watson (Wanganui West) 20. v. Hutchins (Wanganui East) 16. W. Watson (Ractihi) 16, v. Steel (Gonv.l/ l 15. Second Round. Easton 7, v. H. Watson 22. W. Watson 11, v. Glover 19. Third Round. Glover 15, v. Watson 15, Replay. Glover 17, v. Watson 15. In the first round Easton (Taihape) defeated G. Handley (Rapanui) by 22 to 7. During tho course of play Hundley scored one 3, and the remainder in singles. H. Watsou (Wanganui West) defeated Hutchins (Wanganui East) by 20 to 16. Ou tho 13th head the score stood at 15 to 11 iu Hutchins’ favour, and ou the 16th it was 16 to 13 still in Hutchins’ favour. There ho remained to the finish, while Watson put on 7 points. W. Watson (Ractihi) * defeated Steel (Gonville) after an exciting finish by 16 to 15. On the 14th head the score was 9 all; on the 17th it was 13 all, and on the 19th it stood at 14 all. On the 20th Steel secured a single, but on the 21st Watson notched, a brace, giving hiiu victory by one point. During the course of play Watson secured two fours.

Glover (St. John’s) defeated London (Wanganui) by 18 to 16. On tuu ninth head the score stood B—7 to Glover; on the 17th it stood at 13 all. Ou tho 19th Glover secured four, making the score 18 —13 in his favour. On tho 20th and 21st London secured 1 and 2 respectively, being defeated by twe points. As tho contest was played on the one-life system, the end of the first round saw four eliminated, leaving four in to play tho second round.

The final commenced at 2 p.m. Watson lead off with a short bowl. Glover’s first and second drew into shots. Watson, with his lust, drew into scoond place. The second head was rather scattered. Glover obtained one, being six intehes behind kitty. In the third head Watson’s second rested kitty from Glover, which was not altered. In the fourth head, when Watson played his last, Glover lay two. The former played with a little on and shifted both shot bowls and. lay one up. Giover in turn did the same with a beauty and scented one.

Both played perfect bowls in the fifth, head. Glover lay four when Watson, with his last, drew perfectly and obtained one —-3—-2 to Glover.

Sixth Head. —Watson lay four when Glover, with his fast, drew a perfect shot and secured one— —2 to Glover. Seventh Head—This brought a single to Glover—4 3 to him. Eighth Head.—Watson’s first and seteond lay shots. Glover with his second rested kitty and lay. Watson with his last picked up kitty and obtained two —5 —4 to Watson. Ninth Head.—Watson’s first d-cw kitty. Glover w’ith all four bowls was a little over the head. Watson with bis last three played for position 6—4 to Watson. Tenth Head—Glover with his first drew within three inches of kitty. Watson drew into second place but Glover’s last, a beauty, rested, Watson securing two for the head 6 all. Eleventh Head.—Watson lay shot when Glover, with his third, shifted kitty, bringing his second bowl into shot. This Watson did not alter 7 6 to Glover. Twelfth Head.—When Watson bad his last to play Glover lay, two. The former played through a difficult passage and secured shot —7 all. Thirteenth Head.—Glover lay three when Watson still had one to play, which he brought into second place— 8 — 7 to Glover. Fourteenth Head. —Watsua lay two when Glover, with his last, separated, the two shot bowls and secured one — 9 7 to Glover. Fifteenth Head. —Glover’s first and second lay shots. Watson with his third and fourth shifted the shots and secured two. Glover with his last did not alter—9 ail. Sixteenth Head. —Glover’s first drew on kitty, which Watson rested and lay. Watson with his third played a beauty and pushed Glover through and lay two. Glover failed to alter, while Watson, with his last, drew another, giving him three for the head—l2 —9 to Watson. Seventeenth Head. —Watson drew on kitty which was never shifted and with his third and fourth drew into shots. Although Glover played beautiful shots ho just missed altering —15 — 9 to Watson. Eighteenth Head.—A good head, with nil bowls close on kitty, resulting in one to Glover —15 —1 to Watson. Nineteenth Head. —Glover with his la«t drew into score, giving him two, but Watson with his last came, into rev-ond place—l5 —11 to Watson. Twentieth Head.—Glover lay two when Watson, with his last, shifted kitty for second shot —15—12 to Watson. Twenty-first Head.—Glover, with his first and second, drew within four inches d kitty and these wore not shifted. Watsou played to rest these two btii failed, his last going over the head. Glover with his last drew into third place, giving him three for the head ami making tho score 15 all. This made it necessary for the game to be played over again. In the replay the standard of play, as in the first, was of a very high order, both players drawing niagn’ficent shots. Tho score on the seventh hem! was 7 -I to Watson. tin the eighth Glover secured the possible of four. The 13th head, by a coincidence,

brought Glover to 13, whore he remained for six heads. On the 18th the score was 14 —13 to Watson. Tho 19th brought a handy three to Glover, making the score 16 —14 in his favour. On the 20*h Watson lay two when Glover, with his last, rested both and secured a singiC—l7—l4 to Glover. When the 21st was started Watson required three to tie or four to win. With only one bowl left there wa« no possibility of his doing this so he burnt the head. In tho replay,, had he accomplished what he played for, to trail kitty, he would, have secured the three and made another draw, but unfortunately for him he ran over the head, missing kitty by a narrow margin and securing a single only. Thus he suffered defeat by twe points. At the couclusion of play Mr. A. Crawford, president of the centre, made complimentary reference to the high order of play all through the games. Continuing, Mr. Crawford made special reference to the play of Glover and Watson, after which the cup was presented to Glover. Cheers were given for both players. Paring tho course of his remarks, Mr. Crawford thanked tho markers for their attendance and also made special reference to the excellent playing condition of the Wanganui East greens.
