NOTES ON THE RACING (Special tv 4 •Chronicle. ’’ j NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 8. The racing throughout was interesting, though some of the fields were smaller than had at first, appeared likely from the acceptances. The alteration of the intervals between races from 40 minutes to 45 minutes did not assist the club much, for the concluding event was the best part of half an hour late. A firm favourite for the Waitara Hurdles, Blacksmith flattered his supporters for most of the journey but was beaten into fourth place at the finish. Royal Acre made the pace until sixfurlongs from home, when he was beaten and dropped right out. Chang and Blacksmith then took charge from Invictus, and a little later Chang went out by himself. Invictus and Blacksmith chased him hard but Chang easily held his own and won by three lengths from Constant Sun, who came with a strong late run from well back to cut out Invictus and Blacksmith by a length and a-half. Blacksmith a head further back. Esteem and Royal Acre were a Inng way back. Stadium, a firm favourite for the Juvenile Handicap, could do no better than third. Rollovant (Hunting Song—Carniola) jumped away smartly from number one and won all the way. Aussie Ra (on the outer) and Stadium went with him to the turn, but Rollovant then drew away and was not by any means exended to win by a length. Aussie Ra hanging on to get second by a head from Stadium. Lady Kyra, who did not begin well, was a fair fourth, and the other pair finished down the straight. The Northerner's Sprint. Star Artist, a pronounced favourite for the Flying Handicap, won decisively. Souchong and British Colum bia went with her early but she drew away on the home turn and won by two lengths from Souchong, who beat Pomp by a similar margin. British Columbia was a fair fourth. The winner won well. Pomp did not seem to handle the turn too well and never threatened danger. Voitre Rk’is Cup Winner. K. Voitre, who has recently experienced a run of “outs,’’ so far as riding winners is concerned, came to light with a clever victory on Carfex in the Taranaki Cup. He ran in the lead with Senegal for six or seven furlongs, closely attended by Aga Khan, Royal Artist. Desert Star and, later, Peter

Jackson) the rear being brought up by Vertigern and Alloy. Approaching the home turn, just over three furlongs from home, Voitre suddenly shot away on Carfex, opening up a clear break of tb r -e «r four lengths. This- proved the winning move, as ho ran on nicely in the straight and won by just over two lengths from Peter Jackson, who beat. Alloy by a head. Alloy finished well to get there from his early position, but Aga Khan was disappointing over the concluding stages, up to which nothing in the race had been travelling better. Backers received a set-back in the Okato Hack, when an outsider in Lalla Quex came along from the rear and took it off the leaders in the straight, paying good double figures. Silk Sox made the pace, attended by Rust and Red Flush from Davistock and Taitoru, and with the exception of Davistock, who was beaten on the turn, the leaders were still there entering the straight. At this stage, however, Lalla Quex had moved forward and after a brief struggle she asserted herself to beat Taitoru by a length and a-half, with St. Clara putting in a good run for third from the rear, half a length back. Red Flush was fourth, followed by Silk Sox, Red Rufus and Rust. Rod Rufus did not begin too well and although he ran on fairly well he never was dangerous. Or for Royal Routine. Royal Routine, favourite for the Hightweighr, won in characteristic style. Except for a portion of the journey, when Arvada headed him off, he was always in front on the rails and doing it well. L. G. Morris let his head go entering the straight and he ran on to win by a neck from Alloy, who beat Prince Colossus by half a head. Cereal was a fair fourth, and Arvada next. Alloy, who had previously run third in the Cup, put up another solid effort. Prince Colossus looked dangerous entering the straight but Royal Routine was too smart to be caught. Arvada had had enough by the time they reached the straight. Mr. H. McManaway, who paid 75gns. for Royal Routine at Trcntham last month, has got an early return for his outlay. Diagano, a warm favourite for the concluding event, duly won, but not before his supporters had experienced some moments of anxiety. Lebanon, Illuminate, Grand Score, and Raparahara were all in front of Diagano in the straight, but when Reed finally called on the favourite he came on to win decisively, but with little in reserve. by two lengths from Illuminate, who beat Grand Score by a length. Raparahara was fourth and Kaola next. WEIGHTS FOR SECOND DAY [ Per Tress Association. ]
