AUSTRALIAN FARMERS
PAR’D' IN THE DOMINION TWO VISIT WANGANUI STAY OF A FEW HOURS Two members of the Australian farmers’ party, which is now touring New Zealand, visited Wanganui yesterday. They were Mr. A. K. Martin and Mr. I. W. Scott, of Wagga, New South Wales. Mr. Martin owns a large dairy stud and Air. Scott is an officer of the Department of Agriculture. When in Wanganui the visitors were the guests uf Mr. p. Higginbottom and were shown places of interest by officers of the Department of Agriculture. Mr. Higginbottom motored them to the Harbour Board’s cool stores at :. where the chief grader, Mr. N. Fulton, took them in charge. In the afternoon Mr. H. Cleland took them to the Westmere district, where they had an opportunity of visiting Mr. John Robb's farm and inspecting his Jersey herd, the Westmere dairy factory, the Model Dairy at Rapanui and Air. W. J. Cooper’s Shorthorn stud. “I was very impressed with what 1 saw,” Air. Alartin stated, “but when I get back, to where 1 come from and tell them Westmere can carry a cow to the acre they will call me a liar. ’ ’ Air. Robb took the visitors over his property in detail, showing them the stock he had ready to carry through the winter—36 cows, 2 bulls, 2_horses. 5 rising two-year-old heifers, 17 weancr calves and 10 sheep. These figures showed that in adult beasts alone he was carrying over a beast to the acre, as the area he had in grass was 45 acres. The visitors came tc the conclusion that shelter was the real secret behind the ability of the farm to winter so many stock. Air. Scott and Air. Alartin left again for Hawera last night and will proceed to New Plymouth to-day. They intend to re-join the main party in the north. Time permitted them only a few hours in Wanganui. They would have been glad to stay longer.
