EGMONT RACING CLUB THE SUMMER MEETING AN IMPORTANT FIXTURE. PROSPECTS FOR TODAY. (By ‘‘Kestrel.’’) Weather conditions promise to be perfect for the opening of the Egmont Racing Club’s summer meeting to-day, and the prospects for a very successful meeting are bright. The track is reported to be in splendid order after the recent rain, which has improved it considerably. The win and place totalisators will uc m operation, and in both enclosures ten-shilling tickets may be obtained. charges for admission will rule, and special excursion fares will enable patrons to travel by rail from north or south at reasonable rates. The first event on the programme is the Ohawe Hurdles, for which there are seven carded. It is reported that Blacksmith may be regarded as a likely absentee, in which event. Royal Acre and Riotous may find the newcomer Chang hardest to dispose of. Not a very promising lot of juveniles claim engagements in the Juvenile Handicap, for which No Doubt and Stadium will make most appeal. Many will look to the promising All Spirit to upset the chances of the form horses. The hack sprinters will appear in the Tokaora Hack Handicap. With all the weight Pheon is going to be hard to beat, while an ounce of luck should sec Diagano and La Crown playing a part in the finish. The field of eight for the Egmont Cup is a very even one, with promise of an interesting contest developing. In spite of the fact that many will pass over Peter Jackson just now, it may be taken for granted that this chap will go well. Fiji may repeat his last year’s success, but Arikira is the form horse. All Humbug may be depended on for an honest display, and Carfex, considered unlucky in the Feilding Cup, may make amends here. Aga Khan has been backed and beaten on more than one occasion and few would be prepared to sec him down Arikira to-day, though he may surprise. Alloy’s consistent form cannot be overlooked, and Chopin is another who goes well on the Hawera course. Summed up, one cannot go past Arikira, while Fiji and Carfex may be selected as next best. Immediately afterwards comes the Flying Handicap. Souchong has not earned a winning bracket this season but the Hawera track will suit him. British Columbia was assisted at Takapuna by a moving start, and the walkup start at Hawera may again be in his favour. Refresher was good enough to take to Trentham, and backers will not forget his Stratford success. The Tiger is improving, but Korokio and Arvada will require to improve on recent displays to have a chance. Navaho has a lot of speed and may surprise, but British Columbia and Refresher appear likely to share favouritism. There is no trophy this year for the Nolan Hack Handicap, but the field is of satisfactory calibre. The report that Prince Colossus is amiss will be deplored, for the topweight had a good chance. However, three that will be well supported arc Hunting Bag, Round Table and St. Clara (if started here). Fairway and Lady Spy make most • appeal in the Whareroa Handicap, in the absence of Knolimere. St. Clara has an excellent chance in the concluding event, the Waipapa Hack Handicap, though there will be a lot of money for Oriel and Paparua. Following are the acceptors: — 12.0. OHAWE HURDLES. TRAINING FOR HAWERA TARANAKI OPERATIONS. TUESDAY’S FINAL GALLOPS. The track work at Hawera and New Plymouth on Tuesday morning may be accepted as throwing some light on the prospects for the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting to-day and on Saturday. On Hawera Tracks. The final gallops of local horses engaged on Thursday at the Egmont meeting were performed on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday morning J. Brown sent Carfex (Vaughan) seven furlongs on the plough track before it became unworkable owing to rain. Carfex, who is steadily improving, ran out the distance at a solid pace, finishing strongly over the last halfmile in 50see., writes 11 Limited’ ’ to the Taranaki Herald. Ou the outside of the course proper Rollovant (Shields) easily accounted for Sandlark (Feasey) in a sprint over four furlongs in 52 4-5. Rollovant began too smartly for his companion and never gave him a look in. Chief Line (Feasey) started from the six furlong distance, being accompanied by the Sand Star —Kilcoo two-year-old for three furlongs. The first three furlongs occupied 40, Chief Line running out the six furlongs in 1.21 3-5. Rcparua (Vaughan) sprinted three furlongs alone in 40. The outside of the course proper was used on Tuesday morning for all fast work, and although dead from the rain it provided a splendid galloping ground. Aga Khan (Robinson) was apportioned a working gallop over a mile, striding out well to register 1.54|. Diagano (Robinson) accomplished steady pace work. Carfex (Vaughan) and Chief Line (Feasey), setting out from the seven furlong post, ran together to three furlongs in 41. From this out Carfex had the upper hand, finishing four lengths in front in 1.354. The Tiger (Edgecombe) dashed away brilliantly from the four furlongs post, running his first two furlongs fast. He slowed up in the run home to register 52scc. Beau Star (Vaughan) began smarter than Round Table (Coyle) at five furlongs and shaded him at the finish in I. 2-ssec. No Doubt ( Vaughan) cantered round, I finishing smartly up the straight. I Waiwhetu was given easy pace exercise during the week-end, and on Tuesday morning ran smartly over two furlongs in 25, showing improvement. The Nolan Hack candidate, Blue Boy, galloped half a mile comfortably in gssecs. Ingenuity (Shields) again showed good track form in a gallop over half a mile with Miss Louvain (Feasey), finishing half a length in front in 52sec. Taitoru (Feasey) accomplished another good effort by covering six furlongs in 1.20, the first half-mile, after commencing slowly, occupying 53sec. La Crown (W. Pine) sprinted half a mile from the seven furlongs mark in 54sec. Peter Jackson (W. Pine), who is improving daily, impressed by galloping seven furlongs in 1.32 2-ssec. Paparua, Oriel, Sandlark and Rollovant were apportioned easy exercise tasks. Rose Day and Hilary did solid pace work, while Golden Hair accomplished steady exercise. Silver Wings was given useful pace work during the week-end. Silver Wings displayed pace by sprinting three furlongs on the plough in a tick over 36sec. I’. Brady arrived on Monday night i with Hunting Bag, who is one of the ' prime fancies for the Nolan Hack. S. Gregory also put in an appearance i on the tracks on Tuesday morning with j Lady Spy and Royal Dash. ' Tuesday morning’s arrivals were J. Mullins, with Souchong and Hautuma; J. King, with King Win, and S. Cribb, ! with Bintjjli. L. G. Morris was expected on Wednesday with Stadium, Fiji and another; also A. Neale with All Humbug, All Spirit and Fairway; and E. Penman with Navaho and Bonnie Vale. The hurdler Chang was due yesterday, when the balance of the visitors were expected. At New Plymouth Tracks. The. New Plymouth tracks were dead, but in splendid order for galloping on Tuesday morning when the majority of the local contingent for the Egmont meeting on Thursday were seen in ' action. Ail the local horses look well, writes “Moturoa,” in the Taranaki Herald, and they should pay their way at the Egmont meeting. All fast work took place on the trial grass on Tuesday morning. Headmistress (Davoren) and Silk Sox (Pell) went well over seven furlongs in 1.331, without being pushed out. Tahurangi (Davoren) just shaded Leo Colossus (Ferguson) over five furlongs in 1.4, but Leo Colossus appeared to be going well within himself at the finish. Merry Way had no difficulty in boating the Arausio mare over three furlongs in 42sec. Merry Way looks well. Refresher, Windscreen, Malorni, Royal Acre and Desert Star were among those who did pacework on the inside grass before breakfast. Prince Colossus, whose off foreleg is still badly swollen as the result of the kick he sustained the first day at Trentham, pulled up apparently quite sound after his pacework. No decision has yet been made about starting Prince Colossus in the Nolan Handicap to-day. After breakfast Jacana and Adept were associated over a couple or rounds of good pacework. Jacana blew badly at the finish. Lalla Quex (Pell), who looks none the worse for her race at Ashhurst, was under a pull throughout her seven furlongs in 1.384, the last five furlongs in 1.19 1-5. Arvada (Pell) also looks bright after her racing on Anniversary Day at Ashhurst, and she pleased by running seven furlongs in 1.34, the last five in 1.6. She was always going comfortably. Sovereign Quex and Aussie Ra did pacework. Barlow privately purchased the Lord Quex two-year-old after the Yearling Sales, the price being 175 guineas. It is understood the purchase brings a new owner into the game. Lady Kyra (Farrell) ran an easy three furlongs in 44sec. Orapai, who has apparently thrown

off his muscle soreness, was on the tracks on Tuesday morning. He claims no immediate engagements, however, and is enjoying an easy time. Tigerism is reported to have been giving trouble in one of his good joints and, rather than break him down, it has been decided to treat him to a long spell and bring him in again in the spring.

Tigerism was a good horse in his day and last season won the Feilding Cup and Bolton Handicap (Woodville), and ran a splendid fourth in the Auckland Cup. He was unlucky to bo beaten in the Stratford Cup the following week and was sent across then to Australia to be prepared for the big spring events at Randwick, Caulfield and Flemington. However, after impressing McGrath in his trials at Randwick, Tigerism broke down before he could be raced in Australia and during the past few weeks R. Barlow has been endeavouring to patch him up. Tigerism was raced in the latter part of his career by the New Plymouth boniface Mr. Addie Lile.
