AUSTRALIAN TENNIS

PROGRESS OF CONTESTS SWELTERING HEAT PREVAILS Received Jan. 24, 10.50 p.m. feY’DNEY, Jan. 24. The Australian tennis championships were continued in sweltering heat. In the men’s singles quarter-finals, Quist defeated Moon, 6—3, 6 —3, 6—l; Perry defeated Hopman, 6—3, 6 —4, 6—3; McGrath defeated Hughes, 6—4, 6—4, 6—4; Crawford defeated Lee, 6—2, 7—5, 3—6, 6—2. The women’s singles quarter-finals resulted: Miss llartigan defeated Miss Valkcnburg, 6—l, 6—3; Mrs Molcsworth defeated Miss Hal], 6—4, 6—l; Miss Bickerton defeated Miss Hattcrsley, 6—3, 6—l. Quist staged a net attack against Moon, who was unable to cope with the South Australian’s severe volleys and smashes. Perry’s strong forehand drive was a match-winning factor against Hopman. Fighting a losing battle from the baseline, Hopman tried taking the net, but Perry passed him with line sideline drives. Perry lost only one service, the first game of the mafreh. McGrath was at his best against Hughes. Playing an allcourt game he had Hughes running from side to side. Hughes was the victim of several bad decisions at the beginning of the third sot and thereafter went to pieces. McGrath’s volleying was as good as anything he has shown. The Crawford-Lee match was a poor affair. Lee’s strong forehand won him many points, but Crawford’s superior courtcraft carried him through.
