DEATH AT WHAKAREWABEWA. ROTORUA, Jan. J 5. An old resident of Whakarewarcwa. Mr. Charles Phillips, aged 85. died today in a private hospital. Mr. Phillip.was born in Bath, England, and came to New Zealand as a boy. He was a school teacher in Christchurch and retire! at the age of 35, when he came tc live at Whakarewarcwa, where he haresided for 50 years. Mr. Phillips took a great interest ir the Maoris by whom ho was callei “lather.” and as a mark of respect permission was sought from his family to hold a tangi. This was granted am the body was taken into the Whakare warm pa at 10 o'clock this evening An all-night tangi will he held. Tib body will be taken to Auckland to-mor row morning for cremation.
