INFANTILE PARALYSIS
EFFECTIVE VACCINE AN AMERICAN DISCOVERY SUCCESSFUL TESTS MADE (By Telegraph- Press Association—Copyright), Received Dec. 22, 9.50 p m, NEW YORK, Dee. 21. An announcement from Long Inland College of Medicine that the Infantile I’aralysis Commission, through the director (Dr. Kramer), had developed an immunisation vaceino which had proved as effective in immunising three out of four of the animals, tho tested ratio of immunisation being fully as high as that of standard vaccines, for instance, diphtheria, has created great interest. Dr. Morgan, of tho Commonwealth Health Department, who is touring the United States, said that he hud not yet had an opportunity of inquiry into the Long Island methods. Ho added, however: “It sounds possible and sounds quite all right.” Dr. Kramer stated: “We have reason to expect that this vaccine, which is non-toxie, will be effective in human beings,” but he gave a warning that much remains to bo done before infantile paralysis vaccine will be available for general use. Dr. Kramer described the vaccine mixture of infantile paralysis and a convalescent serum obtained from the blood of recovered patients. He said the virus which causes the disease is not a gorm, but some agent too smaD to bo detected by the most powerful microscope. While convalescent the serum is believed to contain immunising or neutralising chemicals produced by tho patent’s body that render the disease virus harmless.
