DELICATE OPERATION
EYE MUSCLE SHORTENED CHILD GIVEN NORMAL SIGHT SYDNEY, Dec. 16. As the result of a difficult and delicate operation, which, has just been successfully carried out at the Renwick Hospital for Infants, a two-year-old boy, suffering from serious eye trouble, has been given normal sight. The boy was admitted to the hospital some months ago, with a twisted head and neck, and an upward turn in one eye. The trouble was diagnosed as originating w r ith the eye muscles. Although the head and neck yielded to treatment, the upward turn in the eye remained. An incision was made in th e boy’s cheek, and the muscle which operated the globe of the eye was isolated from the others. It was found that this muscle was too powerful, and consequently it -was severed and a quarter of an inch cut out of the centre. The removal of bandages some days later showed that the operation was a definite success, and the child’s vision is now normal.
