ST. LAURENCE’S, ARAMOHO
SUNDAY SCHOOL CONCERT AND PRIZE-GIVING. I A most enjoyable entertainment was provided in St. Laurence’s Hall, Aramoho, on Thursday evening, by the members of the Bible-classes and the scholars of the Sunday School. Great credit is due to Air and Mrs V. Hampton, who organised the entertainment, and to the Sunday School teachers and members of the senior Bibleclasses, who assisted, for the variety and high standard of the items produced. The opening overture by the burlesque band of youthful musicians, who processed through the hall and on to the stage, making a joyful noise, put the large audience into a happy frame of mind for the programme, which was to follow. Some of the outstanding items were a one-act play, “The Advertisement,” by the Bible class girls. The humorous dialogue, “Uncle Jack,” by the senior Sunday School pupils; a humorous sketch, “The Irish Schoolmaster,” by Air Hampton and | the members of the Boys’ Bible-class; and a realistic scene from “The Doctor’s Surgery,” by the members of the Young Men’s Bible-class. The realistic manner in which one patient after another was ‘ chloroformed* with a sledge-hammer, while teeth were extracted with a blacksmith’s tongs, a leg amputated with a wood saw, and most of the internal organs removed with a butcher’s knife proved almost too much for some youthful members of the audience. Another picturesque and attractive item was the action song, “Bye, Baby, Bye,” by the senior Sunday School girls, while Aliss Daisy Clark was compelled to break the rule of the entertainment and give an encore to her violin solo, “Plantation Song. ” During the interval, the Sunday School prizes wore distributed, and certificates awarded to the successful candidates in the diocesan examinations. Of the eighteen scholars who passed, Arthur Gifford, Both McLean, and Zoe Davidson gained first-class honours. Before distributing the prizes, Canon Williams expressed the thanks of the church to Afr Frank Haywood, and the staff of teachers, for their self-sacrificing work on behalf of the Sunday School, and to Afr and Afrs Hampton for their work among the young people.
