MANAWATU RACING CLUB

NEXT WEEK’S MEETING. SCRATCHINGS ANNOUNCED. s Of particular interest to Wanganui - and district followers of the racing < game is the Manawatu Racing Club’s - midsummer meeting, to be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of s next week, and judging by the attraci tive fields which figure in the majority of events for the opening day, the Boxing Day holiday programme is going to be one of the most attractive in the i history of the fixture. Ten figure in the Manawatu Cup, ( which is run over twelve furlongs, and with candidates of the calibre of Plateau, Aga Khan, Tiger Gain, Baroscope, Miladi, Fairway ami Grand Jury , engaged the issue appears very open, i In the open sprint, the Fitzherbert Handicap, the field is not so strong ’ numerically, but there arc such sprint- ’ ers as Cadland, Autopay, Slippery, Souchong and True Shaft engaged, arid there is every likelihood that investors . will find it difficult to anticipate the ' judge’s verdict. In the remaining events there pro- ! miso to be some interesting contests, and form will be followed keenly in view of the fact that most of those seen in action will be patronising the New Year meetings at Marton, Stratford and , Tauherenikau. The first event on Tuesday is scheduled to commence at 12 noon. No Track Work Yesterday. With the meeting still four days away, there was no need for mentors to speoed up their representatives yesterday morning, and no fast work was attempted. The rain had placed the plough, temporarily out of use and, with the course proper not available, all pacework, cantering and trotting, was carired out on No. 3 grass track. Scratchings Announced. Official scratchings for the Manawatu meeting are:— Manawatu Cup.—Arrow Lad, at 11 a.in. yesterday. All Engagements.—Porotiti, at 10.20 a.m. yesterday. Gillies Hack Handicap.—Cawbeen at 7.35 p.m. Thursday night. Although he has dropped out of the Cup race, Arrow Lad will compete on the second day, while there is a prospect that Cawbeen may come in later. Xorotiti, however, will not figure at the meeting, a shoulder injury having necessitated the Fitzherbert Handicap candidate being withdrawn from all events. Riding Engagements. Riding engagements announced for the meeting where Awapuni riders and horses are concerned, are:— B. 11. Morris.—'Pango. G. Wynd.—Thrasher. M. H. Nichol.—Park Acre. L. Faulkner.—High Rank. L. H. Jones,—Arctic Region. W. J. McDowell.—Flower. C. Broughton.—Ythan. T. Green.—Ebcum, Spear Shot. R. Chisholm.—Blacksmith. C .Thomson.—Miss Hushabye, Los Quex. S. Anderson.—Cardinal Moon, Raparahara, Flaxen, Sir Romeo, True Shaft, Boon. Beneficial Rain. The tracks at Awapuni have benefited splendidly by the recent rain and, even though no more should fall, the course proper will be in excellent order for Boxing Day, writes “Binocular” in the Manawatu Standard. The gar- ■ dens have also benefited and although 1 the head gardener feared that an east- ■ crly wind would follow which would ■ batter the water-laden flowers, the 1 wind swung round to the south-west— , the protected side of the property. The ; gardens are consequently looking a 1 veritable picture, the beds fronting the main stand whorein are massed an- < tirrhinums of contrasting colours with borders of lobelia and ageratium, being • a delight to the eyo. Sweet smelling stocks, petunias, sweet peas, schizanthus, hydrangeas, etc., grace the many ' beds and drives, while even ihe canna ] lilcs and dahlias, which are more usu- ; ally associated with the display at the ■ autumn fixture, are to be found burst- , ing into bloom, having quite defied the ■ season and, indeed, the intentions of • the gardeners. Even though the nature of the season had indicated that some • of the beauty of Awapuni would be missing on this occasion, patrons on Boxing Day will find the racecourse maintaining its high reputation. During the past two days, Mr. W. Brax, who fulfils the duty of tote- engineer to the Manawatu, Feilding, and Wanganui Racing Clubs, has been engaged in testing the eelctrical apparatus housed in the totalisator and everything is now in readiness for Boxing Day.
