FAMOUS TOD SLOAN DEATH AT LOS ANGELES THE “MONKEY-SEAT” RIDER LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21. Tod Sloan, the famous jockey, died at noon to-day after a lingering illness. Tod. Sloan was 60 years of age and had long suffered with a liver ailment. He was reputed to be penniless whan he died, although he earned millions on the track. For a long time he was a patient in a country hospital. About three weeks ago his friends removed him to a private institution. A message received earlier in the month stated that Tod Sloan, famous’ “monkey-seat” rider, was dying in hospital in Los Angeles. He was at his prime in the late nineties, and he would still have been within the allotted span, of three years and ten years at the date of his death. Sloan may fairly be said to have caused a revolution in race-riding the world over. When he first rode in England, his seat in the saddle and his methods caused a great stir, but those who scoffed were soon silenced by his success. His plan was to get the best of the start and to go all the way. Sloan’s scat in the saddle has been called various names, but nothing was more appropriate than “the inonkey-on-the-stick,” as he used to perch up on the Cithers of his mount with his knees under his chin, and his body almost horizontal with the horse’aback. In this way, be ’argued, the wind resistance was lessened* and as he won race after race, even the conservative English jockeys shortened their leathers a trifle and tried to ride like the American. Sloan rode for some of the leading stables in England, and had a following of all the heavy backers of the period. He used to bet himself and he liked nothing better than a gamble on an alleged “good thing.” Betting was ultimately his downfall in England, as it got to the ears of the stewards of the Jockey Club that in 1900 ho had backed Codonian for a fortune for the Cambridgeshire. His punter was fined, and Sloan was informed that he need not apply for a license again. When Sloan’s riding days were over ho followed various occupations, including that of an actor. One of his greatest successes on the stage was that of a jockey who by his cleverness outwitted the. villain. Sloan also took up training horses in America, but failed. He then drifted to Hollywood, and appeared in several pictures. For years he had been living quietly in Los Angeles. Some months ago he became a judge of the turtleracing whch was held at one of the pleasure resorts in the Mojave Desert. It was by no means a sinecure, as he was fined for being interested in a gambling business.
