THREE RARE FISHES
MUSEUM ACQUISITIONS. AUCKLAND, Dec. 14. Acquisitions of world-wide scientifie significance in tho realm of fish fauna have been made by the Auckland War Memorial Museum as the result of recent discoveries in New Zealand waters of three fish sent to the museum by finders, a raft fish, a unicorn ribbon fish, and a long-finned albacore. The raft fish has never before been found in Now Zealand waters. The unicorn ribbon fish, as far as is known, is the most complete specimen of a very rare species ever recovered by scientists, and the albacore, it is believed, may prove to be of a type not hitherto recorded in Now Zealand. The raft fish was cast ashore at Whangarei Heads, and is about four inches long, which is believed to be the maximum size. It is one of a deep-sea species sometimes cast up on Australian beaches, where it is always con- I sidered a rarity. Its appearance in New Zealand waters constitutes something entirely new in the records of the Dominion’s fish fauna.
