Sheep Returns.
Support for the proposal that the annual sheep returns should be taken on June 30 instead of March 31 was given at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ tlnion yesterday morning. Government Criticised. Criticism was levelled at the Government yesterday by the Wanganui executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union concerening its policy of using the extra tax on motorists for the Consolidated Fund. Mr. W. Morrison said that the tax should rightly be used by the Main Highways Board for roads, which .would result in a virtual derating of farm lands. “If the tax imposed on motorists were devoted to the roads, instead of to other purposes, we would practically have derating,” he said. ‘The Cnsolidated Fund has taken £500,000 from the highways, and this year it will be taking £400.000.” He recalled that the counties had asked for the extra tax in 1930, but instead of the money being used on the roads, it hml been taken for the Consolidated Fund, and both the Counties’ Association and the motorists were objecting. Value of Dental Clinics. “One of the great institutions that rhe Government has brought into existence is the dental clinic,” said Mr. N. Tyler, chairman of the Gonville School Committee, speaking at the annual breaking-up ceremony of the Gonville School yesterday afternoon. “Not only are they beneficial to the young people of to-day, but they will also find benefit from them in years to come.” Mr. N. Tyler said that as a result of efforts made, the Gonville clinic would have enough funds to carry on for another year without making an appeal to the parents. “If we could collect 2s (id for each child we could run the clinic handsomely for a year and give the dental nurse*all the assistance she requires. That sum is not very much, but it would enable the necessary work to be done for the children. which would otherwise cost their parents much money if it were done elsewhere,” added Mr. Tvler.
