AUCKLAND RACES

ARRIVALS AT ELLERSLIE. [ Per Tress Association, 1 AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. Arrivals this morning include Dollar Prince, IDiatomous, Red Manfred, Pin Money, Brown Betty, Lack, Gipsy Love, Rocket. Cricket Bat, Golden Wings, Copyist, Variant, Croupier, Spiral, Pomp, Burnish, Guarantee, and Southdown. Gold Trail has developed a dry cough again, but otherwise looks well. Croupier, whose leg filled while on the trip from Lyttelton to Wellington, vsas doing walking exercise this morning. The swelling has now gone down, though there is still a little heat in the leg. The trainer is of opinion that this will not interfere with Croupier’s work. ENGAGEMENTS DECLINED. [ Per Press Association. I AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. Courtyard, Corouilla, Senio, and April Fool were scratched at 1 o’clock this afternoon for all their Auckland Racing Club engagements. TE AWAMUTU ECHOES SATURDAY’S MEETING POINTERS FOR ELLERSLIE AUCKLAND, Dee. 19. By his defeat in the Te Awamutu Cup at the Waipa meeting on Saturday King’s Knave did not lose any friends in connection with his Auckland Cup engagement, for he was good even in defeat. He lost four or flv e lengths at the start and then at the end ot three furlongs he had pushed up into a good position on the inside, where i he met with a good deal of bothei. Mungatoon and Trishna were setting a fast pace out in front, but the latter stopped suddenly making the home turn and sent King’s Knave back o second to last. Mungatoon just led at the turn from King March, Alloy, Master Norval (who ran very wide), lied Sun and King’s Knave. The lastnamed came again on the inside m the run home and was only a neck and a head behind Mungatoon and King March at the post. King’s Knave was undoubtedly the unlucky runner. His effort was impressive, and with a stone off his back he must take a lot ot beating on Boxing Day. Mungatoon and King March both went solid races, and it looks as if the latter, now in a new stable, i> not a hopeless case altogether. He is m the Auckland Cup. Mungatoon's engagement on the first day at Ellerslie is the Christmas Handicap. Master Nor val was rather disappointing and »v looked as if his trainer had been a bit easy with him. Alloy went an honest race. Red Sun was a long way back five furlongs from home, where he commenced a solid run to get within striking distance at the home turn, only to fail to come on. However, he will be better suited by the bigger Ellerslie course and should not be disgraced in the Auckland Cup. Bambury Handicapped Despite tb e fact that Bambury drew the outside, he was made favourite or the Flymg Handicap, but with all his speed he failed to get near the front at any part, although he was up fourth half-way through. The handicap of the draw was too much. Impasto, from the sam e stable, was in front soon after the dispatch and he was still there at the home turn, where Jonathan had joined him, with Tradesman, Marechai, Bambury and Chief Cook following. Jonathan was going away at the finish to score a comfortable win from Impasto, with Tradesman and L Allegro (last at the turn) up handy. Jonathan will probably run in the Auckland Cup. Impasto is coming back to his best, and while he should run well in the Railway Handicap he will be all the better for another race or two. Star Artist outclassed a smart field in the Hack Cup. Badly drawn, she took a couple of furlongs to get to the front round the first bend, and was making play with Ruri and Lucidus handy at the home turn. One Kick from her rider and she flew away, to be over four lengths clear at the haltdistance, and she finally won by almost this margin. It was a stylish effort. This filly is in the hack seven as well as the Bailway Handicap at Ellerslie, and she will not be outclassed in either. Of the opposition, Lucidus hung on well, and Royal Gallant (who was last away from the barrier), Arawa Bose, Alpinus and Epigram were running on at the end. Run and Rereatu stopped badly. . Tudor outclassed the opposition in the Piiongia Hurdles, for he was always in a winning position. He looks like developing into a topnotch Jumper. Welcome Boy and Mia Stella went fair races, the latter having an interrupted passage.’ Clan Ronald was best of the others. The winner is not engaged at Ellerslie next week. Chief Lap ought to have won the Kihikihi Hack Handicap, but he was in trouble on the turns aud was floundering badly. Then he went under by half a head only to Tin Lap, who is in excellent form. This pair finished well clear of the others. . Queen Nona was in front early in the Waipa Plate, but was soon headed by Wait and See and Respectful, lhe latter was done with at the home turn, where Queen Nona camo up again. Wait and See and Queen Nona had tl.< finish to themselves, the former scoring by half a head. Ling Moy finished on into third place, and Record Flight was also showing up at the end. Pound Sterling was drawn off the course and then ran a good race under difficulties. King’s Archer had little difficulty in winning the Paterangi Handicap a weak field, although with better luck in the running Thespis might have headed him. The latter is In great order for his Ellerslie hurdle engagements. Knight of Australia was hardly ready, but will improve. Loombination came from a long way back in the Ohaupo Hack Handicap to cut down Arch Ruler (last out of the harrier) and win his first race, u 1 1 D’Artagnan, last two furlongs from home, was right up third. Salt Spray went a fair race, finishing sixth. In between the races Ammon Ra (1 • Webster) was sprinted six furlongs, but was not out after time. He looks big and muscular and he pulled up well. Ammon Ra will havp his first race in the Dominion for a long time when he contests the King’s Plato, one mile at wpight-for-agp. at Ellerslie on Thursday of next week.
