SPEED TYPEWRITING

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP WANGANUI WINS THE JUNIOR The Association of Commercial Science recently held a Dominion competition in speed typewriting and the junior championship, which was for entrants under the age of 18 years, was won by Miss Dulcie Rayner, or the Wanganui Technical College. The association is a body wiiich was formed three years ago, with the definite object of attempting something to bridge th e gap which exists between school and business. The association fully recognised that the field of preparation was amply provided in the professional course by the universities, and for that reason was careful to do nothing that would encroach on that sphere. It was felt, however, that the rank and tile of the commercial world, which largely consisted of non-matricu-lated students, was not so well catered for as they should be, both from the point of view of definite courses of study and also in the direction of examination. The A.C.S., therefore, set out, by its group examinations, to definitely influence study in certain channels, and then to examine. The success that has attended the association’s efforts to date is evidence that the work is appreciated from one end of the Dominion to the other, and A.C.S. students who have won diplomas have been eagerly sought by employers. The typewriting contests are but one phase of its activities, and in consequence of its good work, the association has the undoubted support of educational authorities as well as of the commercial community, and its sphere of activities is rapidly growing. Already for next year group examination support is promised from nineteen centres, whch will extend from Whangarei to the Bluff, and the entries will comp from high schools, technical colleges, private and commercial colleges and denominational schools.
