Under the Card Tournaments Regulation Bill, which was introduced into the House of Representatives last evening and read a first time, school committees and charitable organisations are authorised to hold card tournaments at which prizes are offered. The prizes offered are not to be of a monetary nature, and the winning prize is not to exceed £1 in value. Nut less than seven days’ notice is to be given to the officer in charge of the nearest police office of the time and place fixed for the tournament, the admission fee or other charges proposed to be made, the prizes to be given, and the purposes to which the net proceeds are intended to be devoted. If the Inspector of Police requests an audited statement within fourteen days of the receipts and payments of the tournament, the statement is to be supplied. No person is to be permitted to make any private gain out of any tourna inent. There is provision for the granting of permission for a series of tournaments extending over a period of six months. When the Bill was being introduced, the Minister of .Justice (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe), said the measure w r as on the lines of that introduced by Mr. R. McKeon (Labour, Wellington South). Mr. McKcen had made numerous representations to him on the subject, and he thought there was a genera) desire on the part of school committees that the legislation should be passed.
