COMBINED WEST COAST TEAM THE CHOSEN TEAM. The following team has been chosen to represent the combined tennis districts of Wanganui, Taranaki and Manawatu in a match against Wellington, on December 22 and 23, for the Nunneley Casket: — Mrs Adams (T), Mrs McN. Thompson (M), Miss Purcell (W), and Miss Small (T). Emergency, Miss Rutherford (M). Mrs Adams was a Wellington player, and in 192 G, before her marriage (as Miss Howe) wen the Now Zealand singles title. With Mrs Thomp son (as Miss Trasy) she won the New Zealand doubles in 1927. Both players then represented Wellington. Miss Small also hails from Wellington, but is now resident in Taranaki and is second player in that district, Mrs Adam s being number one. WANGANUI ASSOCIATION “C” GRADE COMPETITION The Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s ”C” grade competitions were advanced a further stage on Saturday, when Wanganui No. 1 defeated Wanganui East No. 3. Scores were as follow, Wanganui names being mentioned first: — Christi© won from Stone, 9—6; White won from TiSher, 9—4; Darrow won from Hansen, 9—2; Lindsay won from Williamson, 9 —4.

Miss Jack won from Miss Tymons, 9—3; Miss Hoare won from Mrs Cowie, 9—6; Miss Strouts won from Miss Beckett, 9—o; Miss Meuli won from Mrs Luxford, 9 —2. Lindsay and Darrow won troni Hanson and Williamson, 9 —3. Misses Jack and Hoare won from Miss Tymons and Mrs Cowie, 9—4; Misses Strouts and Meuli won from Miss Beckett and Mrs Luxford. 9 —l. Wanganui: 99 games; Wanganui East, 32. Owing to season work on, farms the Kai Iwi Club was not able to atrango a team against Gonville No. 2. NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT CLOSING OP ENTRIES Keen interest is already being displayed in the New Year tournament which is to be staged by the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association. This is just as it should be, for entries close next Friday, and intending competitors should make a point of getting their entries in early. To enter early is to save the committee a good deal of work at tho last moment. An energetic canvass of the city clubs should be made by secretaries during the next few days, for on the success of the tournament a good deal depends. From the tournament there should be a certain amount of profit which will assist the Wanganui Association’s finances considerably.. Strong patronage from local enthusiasts is essential in such activities. In addition, there is nothing like tournament tennis to improve one’s play.

That is a fact which players should bear well in mind and act upon. Entrance fees include free morning and afternoon tea and balls are supplied for ail events. VISITORS FROM FEILDING MATCH WITH WANGANUI CLUB A most enjoyable day was spent on tho Wanganui Tennis Chib’s court! over the week-end until the rain stopped play. The Feilding Club sent through a team which tried conclusions with the local club. Wanganui were leading when play ceased. MATCH WITH FIRE BRIGADE ( THE “CHRONICLE” CLUB A very enjoyable match was played on the Wanganui Fire Brigade court, on Saturday between a team representing tho brigade and one from the “Chronicle” Tennis Club. The Brigade won by five sets to three. The visitors wete entertained to afternoon tea and the match was so thoroughly enjoyed that it will certainly be the forerunner of more.
