I— (By

"HALF VOLLEY")

The latest addition to the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association is the liapanui Club (Kai Iwi Beach). The seaside club has three excellent courts on which a great deal of work has been done during the winter. A spacious pavilion is nearing completion and taken altogether the Rapanui Club should make a very welcome addition to the Wanganui ranks. Coming Events. —lAeccmber 26, 27 and 28 tiouth. Canterbury championships at Timaru. December 30, January 1 to 5, New Zealand championships at Christcmuch. January 1 to 4, Wanganui tourua aient. Programmes for the Wanganui New Year tournament have been circulated to club secretaries. It would be advisable for players who are intending tu enter to arrange their partners immediately. As the Wanganui East dub intends holding a garden party next Saturday, the association match committee has decided not to play the C grade matches on that date. Wanganui CAih As a result of the long spell of dry weather the courts are now beginning to show signs of wear. Although two courts are watered and rolled each week, lhe io is a real need for a good soaking rain, without which it is nnl possible to prevent the courts from becoming bare of grass. Good progress has been made with the handicap and championship events and all second round matches have now been completed. Players are still inclined to leave the playing of their matches to the last possible day before the scratching takes place. This method does not help the committee and only causes overcrowding on the courts during the week-end.

The B grade match played last Saturday week was very disappointing in its result for the club. The St. John’s team played much better than was generally expected and gained an easy win. No excuse can be found for the Wanganui Club team, as they were playing on theii own courts. Some consolation can be derived from the fact that the St. John’s team had an equally easy win in the final against Gonville. It is up to the members of the C teams to regain for the club its lowered prestige. Several pairs entered from the club for the Kay-Gaisford Benefit Tournament held on the Wanganui East courts during the week-end. Pcrfci t weather prevailed and a thoioughly enjoyable time was had by everyone.
