BYRD EXPEDITION
RUPPBKT AT WELLINGTON. 1 Per Pr®M Association. J WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. Rear-Admiral By?d, with the mam body of his second Antarctic expedition, completed the first stage ol tho long voyage to the Bay of Whales late to-night, when he arrived in the steamer Jacob Ruppert from Bostou via the Panama Canal and Easter island. All day long the steamer had been- plugging against a strong northwest gale, and it was not until nearly ten o’clock that she arrived off Pencarrow Head and was boarded by the pilot. The Jacob Ruppert anchored iu the stream about eleven o’clock. She will be passed by the medical and Customs authorities to-morrow morning and will berth at the Pipitea wharf between eight and nine o’clock. The ship has called at Wellington u load a quantity of stores and equipment, and as time is pressing, every effort will be made to get her away ou Saturday direct for the Antarctic. The Jacob Ruppert is a steamer of about 4700 tons gross, built in 1920. She is very similar to the Golden HarThose accompanying Rear-Admiral Byrd include several members of his first expedition, among them Harold June, chief aviation officer, who was with the leader on his flight to the South Pole. Captain Innes Taylor i# in charge of the sledging dogs, and Victor Czegka is chief supply officer.
