Perfect summer weather prevailed for the second day of the Takapuna Jockey Club meeting, when there was another good attendance. The totalisator receipts were £21,101, an increase of £5506 10s on last year’s figure. The receipts for the meeting was £42,956, an increase of £6879 15s over last year. The day began with another large dividend when Roman Mascot beat a field of 23 to pay over a third of a century on the win machine. There were no other double-figure returns. An inquiry was held regarding bumping half-way up the straight between Hampton Park and Berea tu in the Cautley Handicap and the Judicial Committee decided that the bumping was accidental. Nearing the turn Roman Mascot shot through on the rails when Bellkyrian took Chief Clerk and Teddy Boy out wide. Roman Mascot ran on well to score by a length from Solarium, who galloped very fast on the outside to beat Bellkyrian by half a length. Chief Clerk was fourth. Time, 1.14. Halfway down the straight Rereatu attempted to go between the leaders but was badly stopped, Sinking Fund going on to win by half a head from Greek Gold and Quietly, who ran a dead-heat for second. Soon King Mcstor assumed command from Gay Marigold and Tavern Knight, who were together ahead of Psychologist, Thespis, Bugle Call, Kurapae and Jonathan. Gay Marigold ran on strongly under pressure to score decisively by one and three-quarter lengths from Thespis, with Tavern Knight a length away, third. Musquil was fourth. Time, 1.53. The inside horses, Lady Burleigh and Gay Blonde, were quickest to find their feet, Gay Blonde leading along the back from Waitaka, Rercpai and High Crest. Gay Blonde stayed on solidly to score by two lengths from Rprepai, who defeated Royal Appellant by a similar margin. Wahroonga was fourth. Time, 1.0 2-5. ST. Whakapara began to tire nearing the turn and Alloy led into the straight from Mungatoon, Prolyxo, Whakapara and Lord Vai. Then Prolyxo shot to the front to win by a length from Alloy, who beat Mungatoon by two lengths. Palm Queen was fourth. Time, 1.52 3-5. Arch Ruler, Hushing and Sinking Fund were smartest to begin but Boughal, who was last away from the outside, showed brilliant speed to take the lead after a furlong. Boughal was still in command entering the straight from Sinking Fund, Arch Ruler, Expectancy, Cherry King and Hushing. Sinking Fund challenged and stayed on to win nicely by three parts of a length from Boughal. Arch Ruler was a length away and Royal Gallant was fourth. Time, 1.27. The three leaders held their respective positions to the finish, Lady’s Boy winning by a head from Sunny Sky, who beat Jaeldy Karo by two lengths. Time, 1.25 3-5.
