WOMEN SENT TO GAOL

CASES OF SHOPLIFTING MAGISTRATE’S COMMENT I Per Frew Anodatioa. ] AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. Three women were sent to gaol today by the magistrate (Mr. Hunt) lor shoplifting. They were; Mrs. Annie Eveline Snowden, aged 29, for stealing a bathing cod tunic; Airs. Echcl Alice Carrick, aged 23 t for stealing shoes; and Margaiet Ann Robinson, for stealing sheets and shoes. Airs. Snowden was stated to have three children. Airs. Carrick has no children but is in bad health. Ln sentencing the three women to seven days’ imprisonment, the magistrate remarked: “Probation does not seem to stop these women. They come here and try to justify themselves by saying that they have been in bad health or have a number of children. None of them can pay a fine. What am Ito do with them? During last week there have been two or three similar cases. They are getting too common. ” After passing the sentence he said: “We’ll see if that will stop it for a month or so.” Turning to Major Gordon, of the Salvation Army, who is female probation officer, he said: “Now' you can look after the children of Airs. Snowden.”
