NO SETTLEMENT REACHED. OUTLOOK NOT BRIGHT. JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 1. All attempts to settle tho strike at the New State areas mine have failed. The, conl'ercnco between tho Chamber of Alines and the Aline Workers’ Union proved abortive, and the situation is now likely to become unpleasant, since the mine managers informed tho strikers that they would be dismissed unless they returned to work. Only five men have thus far returned. The others are collecting funds to continue the strike. I
