Reports of weather conditions cn the Tasman having shown that the winds had moderated, Air. C. T. P. Ulin decided this afternoon to start his flight to New Plymouth. The ’plane “Faith in Australia,” at Richmond aerodrome, was given the final oversight. The tanks were filled and in the presence of a considerable crowd Air. Ulin and party took off at 5.27 p.m. The ’plane rose after a 200 yards run, gained elevation, and made off seaward escorted by a number of private ’planes towards the mists over the sea. Air. Ulin was accompanied by Air. G. U. Allen, co-pilot and wireless operator, Air. R. T. Bolton, engineer, Airs. Ulm and Miss N. Rogers. The crowd cheered lustily as the ’plane straightened out on the course. A head wind of about 15 miles hourly is expected to hold, and at a cruising speed of 85 miles an hour, the flight should be accomplished in about 13 hours. Half-hourly messages arc expected to bo dispatched from the ’plane. The women looked cheerful and anticipated that their passage as the first female transtasman tiers would be a thrilling success. Airs. Ulm said her role would be caterer for the trip. MESSAGES FROM ’PLANE. Received Dec. 3, 11.55 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 3. Messages from the “ Faith jn Australia” have been received as follow: 9.21 p.m.: Happy to bo on our way to New Zealand. The sun is still shining over the Australian coast. 9.25 p.m.: Now one hour 30 minutes in the air. Height 5500 feet. Flying over broken cloud. Everything o.k. cheerio. 10.30 p.m.: Flying at 7000 feet above the clouds. Aloon just appeared oyer the horizon. Stars bright, everything o.k. Cheerio. 12.14 a.m.: Still flying at 7000 feet above the cloud layer in clear moonlight. Wo all enjoyed our meal about an hour ago. Cheerio. MESSAGES BECOME FAINT. LATE REPORT FROM SYDNEY. Received Dec. 4, 12.44 a.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 4. Afcssages from Air. Ulm’s ’plane are now not plainly decipherable, but the latest before ten o’clock indicated that all was going well.
