INCOME TAX EVASION
BEER BARON GAOLED HEAVY FINES IMPOSED. NEW YORK, Dec. I. A victory for the Federal Government ‘comparable with the Capone case occurred to-day with the, conviction of “Waxey” Gordon, New Jersey beer baron, for evading 1,000,000 dollars of income taxes. Ho was sentenced to ten years’ gaol ami lined 20,000 dollars ami 60,000 dollars costs. The testimony during the trial revealed the operation of many large breweries illicitly, the employment of strong squads to •compel the sale of products, and immense profits. Gordon was living in extreme luxury but was making no tax returns. The defence contended that his client was a. public benefactor and gave employment to thousands of persons.
