Hawaii Rocked

SEISMIC DISTURBANCES VOLCANO IN ERUPTION By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyriffh?. Received Dec. 3, 6.30 p.m. HILO (Hawaii), Dee. 2. The entire island of Hawaii wa shaken cm Saturday by rattling earth quake shocks accompanied by scismi'disturbances, as Manauloa volcano burst into unusual activity. Columns of vapour shot a mile upward from the volcano, and .simultaneous earth shocks and seismic disturbances indicated the flowing of lava within the. base of the island. There is no expectation of danger ami residents arc not excited. LAVA FLOODING CRATER WILL ACTIVITY INCREASE? Recoiled Doc. 3, .11.55 p.m. HILO (Hawaii), Dec. 2. .Spurting fiery fountains 590 to 1000 leer in the air along a two-mile rift in the floor of Alokuaweoweo crater at the summit of Mauna Loa, this 1300 foot high volcano burst, into eruption after dormancy since 1925. Lava covering a square mile of the crater floor late on ■Saturday was an impressive sight from an aeroplane flying at an altitude of 14,000 feet. The lava was flowing like water from about 200 minor fountains, while one huge one tossed a fiery column high, with streams interlacing over the crater floor. As yet it. seems unlikely that thet crater will overflow, and the lava cascade down the mountainside, as happened seven years ago, when it destroyed tho fishing village of Hoopu Loa. From an opening high in the wall of the crater lava gushed forth over old cones of concealed lava, cascading 1000 feet into the pit. As darkness came on the glow of the eruption was visible 100 miles away. Dr. Thomas Jagger, Government volcanologist, is hurrying to the scene from his observatory on the brink of Kilauea. Ho predicted this as the beginning of the greatest activity in 30 years.
