RACING AT AUCKLAND

THE TAKA PUNA MEETING. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Dec. 1. One of the must interesting fixtures to be staged at Takapuna lor years is that commencing to-morrow, fur there arc large fields all round. The Takapuna Jockey Club is one of the few clubs yet to have its first trial with the win and place system of betting, and given fine weather the financial returns should show a big forward leap. One of the best events scheduled foi to-morrow is the Takapuna Plate, which drew so many horses that a division was thought certain and arrangements made provisionally for its cutting up, but there have been enough withdrawals to prevent its division. Under those circumstances the field will be altogether too large for the course and not many will have a chance at the end of the initial furlong. The list of possibilites is a long one ond comprises British Columbia, Jonathan, Lucid us, D’Artagnan, Tavern Knight, Boughal, Delrain, Kiltowyn, Ruri, Cherry King, Rercatu and Star Artist. It is going to be a great race, and with plenty of trouble at more than one stage of the contest. The principal handicap event to-mor-row is the Alison Cup, and the issue which appears to be between three at the top of the list—Baroscope, Speedmint and Master Norval—against some of the lightweights, who will go very fast round the turning course. But this trio may hold their own over Merry Damon, Maori Boy and Mungatoon. These are only two of the real problems facing investors to-morrow. Horses recommended in their engagements are the following:— Melrose Maiden (12.0). —Alignment, Sir Rua, Pelagia.

Spring Handicap (12.42) —Bambury, Hampton Park, Greek Gold. Ponui Hack (1.26) —Gay Broney, Sunny Bachelor, United. Alison Cup (2.12) —Master Norval, Speedmint, Barascope. Cambria Handicap (2.55). —High Crest, Rerepai, Nun Nicer. Takapuna Plate (3.44). —Kiltowyn, Star Artist, Jonathan.

Tiri High-Weight (4.27) —Black Marlin, Alpinus, Chock Say. Cheltenham Handicap (5.10) —Prolyxo, Paganelli, Puriri Park. On the second day, the Pupuke Plate, another “hack classic,” will be run, and this event over nine furlongs, will suit Kiltowyn and Tavern Knight best. However, if Kiltowyn wins to-day he will not be eligible, for he will be out of hacks. 12.0. MELROSE MAIDEN HANDICAP (Of £lOO ; six furlongs.)
