MARTON ATHLETIC CLUB. GALPIN CUP SERIES. The first evening sports meeting of the Galpin Cup scries will be held on the Alarton Park on Tuesday evening next commencing at 7.30 o’clock. The, events to be decided are: Cycling, half, one and two miles; men’s running, 100, 220, 880 yards and one mile handicap; ladies’ running, 75 and 100 yards handicap, and several juvenile events. Entries for all the above handicap events will close with the secretary (Air. J. C. Thomas) at 9 o’clock this (Saturday) evening. HEADAIASTER OF NGA TAWA SCHOOL. The trustees of the Wellington Diocesan School for Girls, Marton, have received confirmation that the selection committee appointed by them in England to find a successor to Miss AfcCall have unanimously chosen as headmistress Aliss Alitchell, B.A. (with honours in French), of London University, at present senior French mistress nt Dudley Girls’ School, formerly house and second mistress, Kocdcan School, Johannesburg. Aliss Alitchell sails from England at the end of December and should arrive in New Zealand in time for the beginning of next term. THE CIVIC THEATRE. “THE WHITE SISTER.” Heralded as one of Aletro-Goldwyn-Alayer’s most ambitious productions of the year, “The White Sister,” will open to-day at the Ulvlc Theatre with Helen Hayes and Clark Gable costarred for the first time in. their respective careers Aliss Hayes, who scored an outstanding portrayal in “The Sin of Aladelon Claudet,” plays the part of Angela Chiaro monte, daughter of an Italian prince, in “The White Sister.” Gable, whose most recent film appearances were in “Strange Interlude” and “No Alanof Her Own,” has the role of Giovanni Severi, a lieutenant in the Italian army. Th e strong part of Angela’s father is enacted by Lewis Stone and important rolea arc filled by Louise Closser Hale, Alay Robson, Edward Arnold and Alan Edwards. “The White Sister,” termed the most stirring and poignant love story In the history of fiction, was selected by Metro-Goldwyn-Afayer as an ideal vehicle for the “co-starring talents of Helen Hayes and Clark Gable. THE RAINFALL During the month just ended, according to statistics supplied by Mr E. J. Wilde, ‘Alirfield,’ the rainfall in Marton totalled 2.13 inches, or well below the average of 4.16. The total for the year to date is 37.68 inches, compared with the average of 37.19. Daily precipitations were recorded as follows: —Ist., .35; 3rd., .12; 4th., .04; sth., .41; 6th., .01; 10th., .11; 11th., .05; I2th., .01; 15th., .03; 20th., .07; 21st., .62; 23rd., .30; 29th., .03.

CRICKET Old Boys play Hunterville, and Porewa play Alarton at Alarton this afternoon. CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL FURTHER ARRANGEAIENTS MADE. Further arrangements in connection with the Alarton Christmas Carnival were made last evening, when the Mayer (Mr F. Purnell) presided over a good attendance of members. The carnival is to be started on December 16, when (coloured lights will be used and the Wanganui Garrison Band will play from 7.30 o’clock onwards. On Wednesday, December 20, a monster athletic carnival will be held in the Alarton Park. “Alystery” men will bo present with a prize of 10s, which will be given to the persons who addresses them with the words: “The depression is over. Give me that 10s.” The Alarton Band will be on parade, and arrangements are being made for a visit by the Hunterville Pipe Band. * ‘Father Christmas” will arrive by “aeroplane” on Friday, December 22, when balloons and free rides will be given to children. On Christmas Eve, December 23, Christmas shopping will be at its height, and the streets will be decorated. The Alarton Afunicipal Band will play selections. On Now Year’s Eve, December 30, there will be a display by 400 Boy Scouts on the Alarton Park at 2.30 o’clock, and the Scouts will also parade again in the evening. The Marton Band will play from 10 o'clock onwards. It was reported by the canvassing committee that there had been a fine response from the business section of the community.
